Subject specific competences:

The student:

  • is familiar with the laws, rules and   regulations prescribing the competences required for blood transfusion nursing interventions and for blood transfusion treatment;
  • is familiar with nurses' competences in transfusion interventions for blood and blood preparations;
  • is familiar with the principles of donating blood and the criteria for selecting blood donors;
  • is familiar with the preparation methods of blood components, their characteristics, storage, transportation and usage requirements (blood components include concentrated erythrocytes, thrombocytes, leukocytes, fresh frozen plasma, and blood medications (albumins, gamma globulins, blood coagulation factors);
  • knows how to test for ABO and RhD blood groups on a glass slide;
  • understands the importance and the basic principles of blood component pre-transfusion laboratory examinations (ABO and RhD blood groups, cross match, and bedside test);
  • is familiar with blood components transfusion principles;
  • is familiar with possible harmful effects of blood component transfusion and required measures;
  • acquires and deepens nursing competences for blood treatment of patients, learns how to search for information in this field;
  • recognizes health issues in blood donors, responds to them independently and solves them under the supervision of a clinical mentor by offering suggestions or conducting interventions;
  • is familiar with characteristics of blood components and their storage conditions;
  • recognizes adverse reactions of blood transfusion in patients and knows how to react to them appropriately.
