Subject-specific competences:
  • to become familiar with development guidelines and aims of organized palliative care;
  • to apply the palliative approach – basics of PC in the setting with terminally ill patients and their relatives;
  • to manage the integral coordination of care and interdisciplinary team work in all palliative care settings;
  • to develop interpersonal and communication skills appropriate for palliative care;
  • to increase the physical comfort of patients throughout the duration of their illness;
  • to recognize, assess and treat the symptoms of incurable diseases;
  • to recognize patients’ psychological needs;
  • to recognize patients’ social needs;
  • to recognize patients’ spiritual needs;
  • to help meet the needs of family carers regarding short-, middle- and long-term aims in patient care;
  • to react to the challenges of clinical and ethical decision making in PC;
  • to become familiar with the techniques and mechanisms of preventing and decreasing stress and burnout;
  • to become familiar with the development and definition of oncology nursing;
  • to become familiar with nurses’ basic fields of work and roles in cancer patient treatment at the primary, secondary and tertiary levels;
  • to become familiar with and understand the basic principles of treatment and nursing in cancer patients;
  • to learn about interventions in the prevention and management of undesired effects of oncology treatment;
  • to understand the meaning of holistic treatment of cancer patients and the role of health care education. 

The student becomes familiar with, understands, and knows how to apply the ways of thinking and values connected with the implementation of continuous palliative care of patients with terminal illness and oncology patients in most typical situations. Students know the roles of nursing and different members of the interdisciplinary team in applying the key concepts of palliative care in the chronically ill patients and their relatives and in oncology nursing care.
