Subject-specific competences: Students:
  • expand their knowledge on the modern approaches and methods in hospital hygiene, and control of healthcare-associated infections;
  • expand their knowledge about nurses’ role in the prevention and management of healthcare-associated infections and the organization of this field according to the legislative framework;
  • expand their knowledge about the theory behind nursing interventions in infection prevention;
  • acquire the knowledge and skills on the prevention of healthcare-associated infections in nursing care, in accordance with professional guidelines and the legislative framework;
  • expand existing knowledge of the risks for healthcare-associated infections in hospitals and other health care institutions, also for community nursing and other types of health care visits at home;
  • learn about the most frequent healthcare-associated infections, their prevention and containment, are familiar with the issue of antimicrobial resistance in bacteria and their containment;
  • expand existing knowledge in epidemiological methods and ways of monitoring and following hospital-acquired infections;
  • obtain knowledge on the HACCP system and control measures in kitchens in health-care;
  • expand existing knowledge about cleaning, decontamination, disinfection, sterilization and waste disposal.

Knowledge and understanding:
  • knowledge and understanding of how healthcare-associated infections arise, their transmission and prevention;
  • knowledge and understanding of the most frequent healthcare-associated infections, their prevention and containment;
  • knowledge and understanding about the issue of antimicrobial resistance in bacteria and their containment;
  • knowledge of preventive measures for healthcare-associated infections in health care and social institutions;
  • legislative framework for implementing control of healthcare-associated infections;
  • knowledge of the definitions of healthcare-associated infections;
  • knowledge of the interventions for infections resulting from invasive diagnostic, therapeutic, and nursing procedures and special interventions in case of infections of acute and chronic wounds;
  • integration of hygienic, ecological, and economic principles of infection control;
  • knowledge of health education methods for patients with a healthcare-associated infection;
  • awareness of the importance of epidemiological monitoring of hospital-acquired infections.
