Dr. Urška Dermota was born on 4 October 1974 in Jesenice, where she later attended and finished primary school and upper secondary school (science and maths programme). She studied Microbiology at the Biotechnical Faculty of the University of Ljubljana, graduating on 17 April 2000 with a bachelor's thesis entitled Prevalence of Clostridium botulinum in soil of Gorenjska. In the same year, she started working at the Laboratory of Medical Microbiology of the Kranj Public Health Institute. From 2003 to 2013, she was Head of the General Bacteriology Sub-unit and the Sterilisation with Washroom Sub-unit. From 2014 to 2021, she was Head of the Laboratory for Screening Specimens, the Laboratory for Urinary Tract Infections, and the Sterilisation with Washroom Unit at the Kranj Department for Medical Microbiology of the National Laboratory of Health, Environment and Food. In year 2021 she started working at Institute of Microbiology and Immunology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Ljubljana. She also mentors secondary school students, university students, and interns. In 2014, she successfully defended her doctoral thesis entitled Molecular determination of virulence factors and genotypes among community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus in Slovenia. She is the author and co-author of a number of original and short scientific articles, academic articles, and a handbook for practical classes. At the Angela Boškin Faculty of Health Care, she is involved in practical classes and the course Prevention of Healthcare-Associated Infections with Microbiology in Year 1. At Faculty of Medicine she is involved in practical classes Basics of Microbiology and Immunology.
