Subject-specific competences: Student gets to know:
  • the culture, ethical standards and values in elderly nursing care,
  • legal framework and types of elderly health care and social care provision,
  • the importance of active aging, preventive actions and health promotion in elderly nursing,
  • nursing in relation to maintaining health of patients with chronic diseases (analysing needs, planning, nursing interventions and nursing evaluation),
  • nursing with geriatric syndromes (analysing needs, planning, nursing interventions and nursing evaluation),
  • the basics of rehabilitation in elderly nursing care,
  • communication patterns with the elderly, their legal guardians, other nursing and multidisciplinary team members and the community,
  • clinical directives for ensuring quality and safety in elderly nursing care,
  • evidence-based contents of elderly nursing care and the ability to critically implement them in practice. 

Knowledge and understanding:
The student:
  • knows how to advocate the rights, needs and autonomy of the elderly in the process of health care provision while taking into account their cultural, religious and personal beliefs,
  • is familiar with the legal framework, professional ethical standards, and the importance of providing and respecting a high level of personal data protection,
  • motivates the elderly and their legal guardians towards a health promoting behaviour, in accordance with their therapy,
  • knows how to use the theoretical knowledge in clinical practice at all the levels of health and social care provision to ensure the dignity, autonomy, life quality and relationships in the social environment,
  • knows how to critically assess problems and apply a systematic approach to finding solutions for nursing problems,
  • independently establishes nursing needs, plans and implements elderly nursing care by using scientific knowledge and experience,
  • is able to implement nursing activities/interventions,
  • is able to evaluate and assess planned goals,
  • is familiar with the types of professional and therapeutic communication with the elderly and their legal guardians,
  • knows how to effectively communicate with multidisciplinary team members and other co-workers,
  • is able to independently provide, use and share the necessary information for nursing care provision,
  • is able to ensure safety, quality and efficiency in nursing care by applying interdisciplinary co-operation,
  • is able to critically evaluate and implement scientific evidence in nursing care,
  • is able to adjust leadership styles in nursing by considering the interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary views on nursing issues and situations,
  • has excellent knowledge and skills for providing safe, high-quality and effective nursing care,
  • knows how to use the instruments to detect safety risks in elderly nursing care,
  • knows the theoretical and methodological approaches in elderly nursing care,
  • is familiar with the processes in elderly nursing care considering the directives for clinical work.
