The overall aim of the course is to enable students to develop knowledge and skills in the teaching and mentoring of patients, relatives and students in clinical and other practice contexts.

Specific learning objectives include that by the end of the course students will be able to:

  • Plan appropriate learning experiences suited to the educational purpose in clinical/practice settings.
  • Apply relevant educational principles to the implementation of such teaching.
  • Apply principles of assessment in appraising students' performance in clinical settings.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of clinical/practice teaching activities.
  • Demonstrate an appreciation of the importance of the teacher-student relationship and the professional-patient/client relationship in the clinical/practice setting.
  • Apply these principles and skills in his/her own setting as a teacher and mentor of patients, relatives and nursing students.
